About me

I am a fully qualified carpenter holding City & Guilds and NVQ certification. I am also a current Construction Site Certificate Scheme card holder and have liability insurance.

I’m North Devon born and bred and after living away for a few years I’ve returned with my family. I took a leap of faith a few years ago, changing careers from teaching to carpentry, and now have a job I genuinely enjoy. I love meeting and working with people and designing and building innovative solutions for them. I take great pride in leaving my customers at the end of the day with a clean and well finished job. Combining my work with the North Devon lifestyle means I’m living my dream with my family.

I love variety in my work. Contact me about the work you are planning, we can have a chat and discuss your options.

Some Previous Projects

A bespoke headboard with floating side tables...

The owners of this holiday let wanted to upgrade one of the bedrooms and give it another nice feature element. This headboard needed to be scribed to the angled ceiling and set the bed 200mm away from the wall for headroom and also mirror the lost socket from behind the headboard. It has been made so that the surround and side tables can be stained with the rest painted a feature colour.

Statement dining nook...

Having recently taken over this holiday let, the client wanted a clean looking statement nook-style seat to accommodate lots of hungry guests. It needed to be modern while matching in with features of the solid kitchen in the same room. The client has then finished it with an eggshell paint to match the kitchen colour and some custom feature cushions are on their way.

Replace single glazing with double glazing...

Sadly older buildings can have many hidden foibles. In this project I was meant to be modifying the frame so that I could replace the single glazing with Argon filled warm edge double glazing. As I began it became clear that the timber frame was far from sound but had been covered over. I excavated the rot, matched the timber profiles, repaired the frame and then completed the task I had initially been employed to do.

Repair or replace this saggy canopy...

Over the past few years this door canopy had begun to sag in the centre and right hand side. The owners had become concerned with its structural stability. Upon inspection it became clear that lots of the joins had started to develop rot and there was no internal supporting structure. It was decided that the top be fully replaced and the original support arms be cleaned up. The replacement needed to be a perfect match for the original as the neighbouring house has a matching canopy. Once I had made and installed the top I painted it and dressed it in fresh lead.

Outdoor Pizza Shack...

As it began to look likely that pubs could re-open, this pub decided to increase the functionality of their outside space by adding a pizza shack alongside their terrace. They would be able to make and cook Pizzas as well as serve beverages from here. It was created as a temporary structure on a strong frame located and chocked on uneven ground. I made the entire structure off site for minimal disruption at the pub and when assembled internally clad it with easy clean surfaces ready for action.

Some handrails please...

This client was preparing their cottage for the booming UK holiday market as we emerged from lockdown. I was tasked with adding a set of handrails to the stairs that were slim to avoid further narrowing the stairs, that let as much light through as possible while still meeting current building regulations. All of it was processed in my workshop to a simple modern design before being installed on site.

Tidying up with discreet storage...

Here the sofa was due to be replaced and the client wanted to use the lost space behind for clean looking invisible storage. A frame was designed with space for yoga mats on one side and the 'man drawer' on the other. Once it was boarded and covered in plasterboard the solid Beech shelf above was made with slide out lower shelves giving access to the storage area beneath.

If 10% is salvageable, repair it...

A street of listed council houses was having its routine paint when it was discovered that many of the casement and sliding sash windows needed significant repair. This shows the process for one window. In all I repaired around 40 of these - there were others in even poorer condition than this.
